How to watch a whale

To kick off the summer, I went on my first ever whale watching cruise. It was probably still early in the whale watching season. We saw a few humpback whales and only caught a glimpse of a few blows and tail flips.

A few anxious whale watchers started to demand: “come on, do a flip!” A few started whistling. The peace was interrupted.

It seems that those viewers might have confused whale watching with a dolphin show in Sea World. It is oblivious to think that the world operates around our will and to our pleasure.

The truth is that other species don’t exist according to humans wish. On a whale watching cruise, we are here to observe, not to dictate.
